The thing about wedding photography is that no matter what, you are taking a bit of a risk. Even if you hire the most professional wedding photographer, they only have one chance to get the shots right. There’s no redo on these photos, so it’s best that you really take your time and do some research before settling on a photographer.
To help you out, we’ve put together a few steps you should be taking to give yourself the best possible chance of choosing a great wedding photographer. Consider this your wedding photographer checklist. Let’s get started.
And when we say do your homework, we mean do serious homework. View the photographer’s web site. Ask to speak to some of their past clients. The thing is, not only does your photographer need to be great at capturing photos, but they also need to be great at working and getting along with multiple people. And the only way you’ll have any idea if your photographer is compatible with your crowd is by meeting them and by asking their past clients how they behaved during shoots.
Unfortunately, a photographer is not one of those expenses you want to cheap out on when it comes to your wedding. These photos stay with you forever, and like we mentioned, there are no do-overs. Cost is always a consideration and it should be. But when comparing the costs of different photographers, consider the quality of the photos you will likely be receiving. Balance the two and make a decision that works for your budget and falls in line with your expectations.
This may seem simple, but you’d be surprised by how many couples don’t think of asking their wedding photographer for references. But these pictures are too important to not to be sure that the photographer can deliver. And judging their past work and interactions with former clients is a sound way to determine whether they’ll be a good fit for your wedding.
Reaching out to your network is a great place to get started. You know someone close to you will want the best for you on your wedding day, so they may go the extra mile to make you happy. You might also be able to swing better deals with people from your network. It’s still a good idea to shop around, though. Working with people you know personally can be tricky, and your goal is still to find the best photographer you can afford.
